"Labour!" has Long been considered a socio-political imperative, because without labour there is no sustenance. However, those unable to find their place in the Information and knowledge-based Society - since they either lack qualifications or are replaced by machines - appear superfluous and risk losing their means of subsistence. Thus, if we consider novel concepts based on new types of safequarding survival, such as Basic income, economy for the common good and post-growth economics, the question arises: Is labour only that which generates an added value? And if labour no longer renders life meaningful, what does?
This will be the Topic of discussion and reflection at the Dürnstein Symposium 2018, including, amongst others, the author and historian Philipp Blom (A), the Economist Mathias Binswanger (CH) and the freelance publicist Christian Felber (A).
